Madeline Reading Red Dress JeanHaydenArt

Thank you for visiting my site!  A little about me:

I was raised in Connecticut and graduated NYU with a major in Studio Art and a minor in Art History.

After many years as a professional graphic designer and illustrator in New York City, I landed a book deal with Simon and Schuster. I spent over a year illustrating and co-writing Be Prepared: A Practical Handbook for New Dads. Now in it’s 30th printing, the book has sold over 350,000 copies and has been printed in ten languages. The success of the book gave me the impetus to paint and illustrate full time.

In my work, I like to capture joyous moments, playfulness and mischief. I can’t resist idealism. I am forever drawn to the warmth and charm in the ads and photographs of the 1950s and 1960s. I am also starting to explore the offbeat styles and aesthetic awkwardness of the 1970s.

Recently, I’ve really enjoyed painting people eating and drinking. I put them up in the dining room to make it feel like we’ve got family and friends around us all the time. Whenever I sell one, I feel like I am saying farewell to a beloved dinner guest.

I thought it would be fun to play with the idea of voyeurism, and painted a series of small works featuring people peeping through things like Venetian blinds and curtains. It’s intriguing when the face is partially obscured. And the little barriers these sly people hide behind give the works a dramatic tension.

Most of the watercolor drawings on the Illustration page are from a children’s book I have been putting together. The story focuses on a group of enthusiastic princesses who reside in a slightly utopian community.

Unless otherwise noted, my original oil paintings are available, and priced below each image. All of my paintings and illustrations can be ordered as prints in various sizes. And if you are interested in a commission, please contact me.
